This tiniest of birds survives in cold climates, nesting in northern forest and then wintering in most of the North American continent.  It has expanded its breeding range into spruce plantings in new areas in the northeast.  The habitat makes it difficult to see as it nesting height may be as high as 60 feet.  Its distinguishing characteristic is the bright yellow and orange (orange on male only) crown-patch bordered by black.
