Gouldian Finch (Chloebia Gouldiae)

14 x 18"

Finch from the Northern region of Australia.  This one found in the Bird Sanctuary in Key West, Florida.  Their habitat normally consists of grass lands and the forest edge while they eat mostly seeds and millet, they also eat cuttle bone and sprouts when in capitivity.  The males are more brilliantly colored than the female.

The finches live in the savanna grasslands of the Kimberley in northwestern Austrailia and prime cattle country.  The original Aboriginal people created natural cycles by lighting small fires which created small areas of burns.  With current programs, the habitat has drastically altered with the fires which have basically endangered the Gouldian Finch
