Mourning Dove

9 x 12"

This juvenile Mourning Dove was on our deck wood pile last spring as it was "fluffing" and preening.  It is very abundant in the United States in rural and urban areas while shunning heavy forests and wetlands.  The growth in numbers is one of the positive effects of urbanization.  The coo and mournful songs of the dove along with its visits to bird feeders make it recognizable to people.  It is the leading game bird in North America's total harvest.
