Pine Grosbeak, female

32 x 48 in., airbrushed acrylic

Pine Grosbeak, female, Passeriforme.  The large male finch (nine inches long) has a bright carmine red on its breast, head, sides while the female consists of the colors above with beautiful grays, orange, browns, and near whites.  There is actually a pattern of the orange or bronze spots along the front and up the outside of the neck area.  Female colors are soft, both warm and cool. The songs, usually in courtship, consist of sequences of clear, flute-like notes along with imitations of other species.  The female is reported to sing on occasion.
